Albert’s Brutal 98 Powers Hampshire to 95-Run Win Over Glamorgan in Vitality Blast*

Toby Albert produced a career-best T20 innings, hammering an unbeaten 98 off 57 balls to lead Hampshire Hawks to a dominant 95-run victory over Glamorgan in the Vitality Blast South Group clash at The Ageas Bowl.

Albert's blistering knock — highlighted by innovative strokeplay and raw power — propelled Hampshire to a daunting 208 for 4. Glamorgan, in reply, collapsed to 113 all out, undone by a fiery spell from Sonny Baker, who claimed career-best figures of 4 for 20.

The result lifts Hampshire above Glamorgan into third place in the South Group table, strengthening their push for a quarter-final spot with three wins from their last four games.

Hampshire opted to bat first but endured a sluggish start. Skipper James Vince fell early, caught behind trying to work the ball offside, and Tom Prest managed just 15 before losing his stumps to Ned Leonard. At 42 for 2 at the end of the powerplay, Hampshire needed a spark.

That came through a rebuilding stand between Joe Weatherley and Albert, who put on 48 runs before Hilton Cartwright joined the party and lit up the innings. Albert, having reached a measured half-century from 37 balls, exploded in the latter stages of his innings — smashing 48 runs off his final 20 deliveries, including several inventive reverse-sweep sixes.

Cartwright was equally destructive, blasting four sixes in a 20-ball 48. Together, the pair added 114 runs, but Cartwright's decision not to rotate the strike in the final over left Albert stranded on 98 — two short of a richly deserved maiden T20 hundred.

Nevertheless, the Hawks closed with 81 runs from the final five overs, setting Glamorgan an uphill chase on a surface where 170 was deemed par.

Glamorgan’s reply never got going. Chris Wood struck early, and Baker ripped through the middle and lower order with pace and precision. Wickets tumbled regularly — Alex Horton scooped to Albert behind the stumps, Ben Kellaway chipped to mid-off, and Colin Ingram and Dan Douthwaite perished trying to force the pace.

Baker's late burst saw him dismiss Asa Tribe and Ned Leonard with sharp bouncers before Imad Wasim holed out, capping off a clinical performance. Mason Crane’s dismissal in the penultimate over sealed Glamorgan’s demise with seven balls to spare.

The comprehensive win not only enhances Hampshire’s net run rate but also sends a strong message as the Blast heads into its decisive final stages. Albert, now back in form after a dip earlier in the season, was rightly hailed as the star of the show — even without the three-figure milestone.
