Eskinazi’s Heroics in Vain as Hampshire Edge Middlesex in Vitality Blast Thriller

James Fuller returned to torment his former side with a match-winning knock as Hampshire clinched a dramatic three-wicket win over Middlesex in a tense Vitality Blast clash at Merchant Taylors' School, Northwood.

Set 188 to win, the Hawks appeared in trouble at 157 for 7 with just 13 balls left, but Fuller’s unbeaten 43 off 26 balls proved decisive. A crucial moment came at the end of the 18th over, when a no-ball and four byes from Noah Cornwell swung the momentum Hampshire’s way. Fuller capitalized immediately, dispatching Leus du Plooy for six off the ensuing free hit and then calmly sealing victory with two balls to spare.

Earlier, Middlesex’s former captain Stephen Eskinazi starred with a magnificent 94 from 48 deliveries, having stepped down from the T20 captaincy earlier in the day. He formed key partnerships of 69 with Kane Williamson (25) and 82 with Max Holden (33), setting the home side up for a big total.

Eskinazi reached his third half-century of the tournament in just 23 balls, showcasing sublime timing and placement. However, hopes of a century were dashed when Scott Currie (4 for 32) uprooted his off stump during a deadly middle-order spell that saw Middlesex lose 7 wickets for 34 runs.

Despite a late cameo from Luke Hollman, Middlesex were restricted to 187 for 8 — a total that looked 20 short of what once seemed likely.

Hampshire’s chase began strongly with James Vince striking a rapid 27, but regular wickets — including two for Hollman and sharp fielding from Du Plooy — left them teetering at 68 for 3.

Joe Weatherley’s aggressive 41 gave the visitors hope before he fell to Hollman’s deceptive googly. With wickets tumbling and pressure mounting, it was Fuller who kept his nerve. His composed yet explosive knock ensured the Hawks walked away with two vital points, keeping their Blast campaign alive.

Middlesex, meanwhile, will rue a late collapse and missed opportunities in the field, as their struggles in the tournament continue despite Eskinazi’s standout performance.
