Green and Holland Wreck Surrey as Leicestershire Cruise to Six-Wicket Win

A superb bowling display from Alex Green and Ian Holland set up a commanding six-wicket victory for Leicestershire Foxes over a depleted Surrey side in the Metro Bank One Day Cup at Guildford on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old Green, representing England Under-19s, produced a career-best 5 for 25 in just his fourth List A appearance, while allrounder Holland claimed 4 for 37 with his clever medium pace. The pair dismantled Surrey’s batting line-up, bowling them out for 174 in 43.1 overs, before the Foxes cruised to 179 for 4 with 21.3 overs to spare.

Despite a sell-out crowd of 2,500 at Woodbridge Road, Surrey—missing 15 players due to The Hundred and further weakened by injuries to Dom Sibley and Matt Fisher—could only offer brief resistance through Ryan Patel (53) and Ollie Sykes (50). The duo shared a fourth-wicket stand of 68, but Patel’s dismissal to the part-time offspin of Rishi Patel sparked a dramatic collapse from 111 for 3 to 141 for 8.

Green, who debuted in first-class cricket last September, bowled with pace and accuracy throughout. He removed Ben Foakes with his second ball and returned to dismantle the middle and lower order, including the scalps of Sykes, Cam Steel, James Taylor, and Josh Blake.

Holland struck early, removing Rory Burns for 3 and Adam Thomas for 6 during a tight opening spell. He returned later to dismiss Nathan Barnwell and Yousuf Majid, the latter edging behind after a brief 32-run stand with Blake.

In reply, Leicestershire’s top order made light work of the chase. Openers Sol Budinger (36) and Rishi Patel (29) provided a fast start, with Shan Masood (27) and Lewis Hill (20) continuing the momentum. While debutant Alex French endured a tough introduction—conceding 26 in two overs—he did claim the wicket of Budinger.

It was Ben Cox who sealed the win in style, finishing 38 not out from 36 balls, including back-to-back sixes off Steel to end the match. He shared an unbroken 57-run partnership with Peter Handscomb (23*), guiding Leicestershire home with ease.

The result marks a strong performance for Leicestershire, while Surrey, fielding a youthful side under the leadership of Ryan Patel, were left to rue missed opportunities and inexperience with bat and ball.

Match Summary:
Surrey 174 all out in 43.1 overs (Patel 53, Sykes 50; Green 5-25, Holland 4-37)
Leicestershire Foxes 179 for 4 in 28.3 overs (Cox 38*, Budinger 36)
Leicestershire won by six wickets
