Rew Brothers Lead Somerset to Victory with Century Stand in One Day Cup Opener

Somerset’s James and Thomas Rew combined in a commanding century partnership to seal a six-wicket win over Middlesex in the opening match of their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign.

Batting together for the first time in senior cricket, the Rew brothers showcased both composure and flair. James Rew starred with a superb unbeaten 106 from 90 balls, striking 15 boundaries, while younger brother Thomas hit a fluent 51 off 54 deliveries, including three sixes and three fours, in what was his maiden senior half-century.

Their 107-run stand was the backbone of Somerset’s successful chase of 290, secured with 15 balls to spare after an early wobble in the innings. While Thomas was dismissed with 58 still needed, James guided Somerset home with authority, sealing the win and reaching his hundred with a pair of crisp boundaries off Henry Brookes.

Earlier, Middlesex posted 289 for 7, led by Josh de Caires’ maiden List A half-century. His 71 came off 86 balls and helped build a solid platform alongside opener Joe Cracknell (23), though the innings was hampered by regular wickets and disciplined bowling from Somerset.

Jack Davies added impetus in the latter stages with a brisk 64, contributing to a 98-run burst in the final 10 overs. Captain Ben Geddes chipped in with 40 during a key rebuilding phase.

Somerset’s attack was spearheaded by Jake Ball (3 for 43) and Jack Leach (3 for 47), both of whom claimed vital wickets at crucial moments. Ball, despite two dropped chances in his opening spell, removed key middle-order batters, while Leach’s spin saw off both Robson and the dangerous de Caires.

Somerset’s reply began steadily as Tom Lammonby (38) and Archie Vaughan built a platform. Middlesex’s bowlers, including Josh Little and Noah Cornwell, managed to apply some pressure, removing the top order before the Rew brothers took control.

James Rew, dropped earlier in the field, batted with elegance and authority, driving and cutting with precision. Thomas played aggressively, highlighted by a reverse slog-swept six off de Caires and a powerful pull off Luke Hollman.

After Thomas departed, Josh Thomas (24*) offered calm support, surviving a chance in the deep before helping see Somerset home.

The Rews’ partnership not only secured the win but marked a memorable moment for Somerset cricket, as two brothers took centre stage in a professional match for the first time — and delivered in style.
