Gurbaz, Charles Fire; Pretorius Strikes as Guyana Amazon Warriors Clinch GSL 2025 Title

A blend of explosive batting and disciplined bowling helped Guyana Amazon Warriors claim the Global Super League (GSL) 2025 title on Friday night, as they defeated defending champions Rangpur Riders by 32 runs in the final at Providence.

After being asked to bat, the Amazon Warriors posted a formidable 196 for 4, built around a dazzling 121-run stand between Johnson Charles and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Charles smashed 67 off 48 balls with 11 fours and a six, while Gurbaz lit up the innings with a 38-ball 66, featuring six fours and four sixes. Their partnership set the foundation before Romario Shepherd applied the finishing touches with a blistering 28 not out from just nine balls, including three sixes.

In response, Rangpur Riders stumbled early, reduced to 32 for 3 in the powerplay. Dwaine Pretorius led the Warriors’ charge with the ball, taking out key top-order batters including Soumya Sarkar, Azmatullah Omarzai, and the dangerous Iftikhar Ahmed, ending with 3 for 37.

Iftikhar tried to resurrect the chase with a valiant 46 off 29 balls, stitching a 73-run stand with Saif Hassan (41), but a second run-out—this time of Saif—sparked a dramatic collapse. Rangpur slid from 102 for 3 to 126 for 8 in just four overs, effectively ending their title defense.

Veteran legspinner Imran Tahir chipped in with 2 for 39, removing Nurul Hasan and Khaled Ahmed, while Gudakesh Motie also picked up two wickets. Akeal Hosein, despite going wicketless, conceded only 24 runs in his four economical overs, keeping the pressure on throughout.

A late cameo from Mahidul Islam Ankon (30 off 17) was not enough to close the gap, as Rangpur were eventually bowled out for 164.

The win marks a major triumph for the Amazon Warriors, who combined top-order firepower with a sharp, strategic bowling display to lift the GSL trophy on home soil.
