Jennings and Wells Power Record Stand as Lancashire Crush Outlaws in Vitality Blast

Lancashire Lightning’s opening pair of Keaton Jennings and Luke Wells rewrote the record books with a blistering 177-run stand, setting the stage for a commanding 47-run win over Nottinghamshire Outlaws in the Vitality Blast at Emirates Old Trafford.

The pair's opening partnership — the highest for any wicket in the North Group’s history — came off just under 16 overs and propelled Lancashire to an imposing total of 216 for 3. Jennings led the way with a commanding 95 off 49 balls, while Wells hammered 87 off 50, as the duo struck six sixes apiece in a powerful display of clean hitting. The total included 13 sixes overall, equalling a club record for Lancashire in a T20 innings.

The partnership eclipsed the previous North Group best of 175 between Graeme Hick and Vikram Solanki for Worcestershire back in 2007. The effort also continued Jennings and Wells’ hot form, having added 79 together just a day earlier in a win over Worcestershire on the same ground.

Put in to bat, Lancashire made the most of a used pitch, with Jennings surviving an early chance on his first ball before unfurling a range of attacking strokes. Wells brought up his half-century off 34 balls, and Jennings followed soon after, needing just 27 deliveries to reach his second fifty in as many games.

Notts briefly fought back after Wells was dismissed for 87, upper-cutting Dillon Pennington to short third man. Moises Henriques pulled off a stunning catch at backward point to remove Ashton Turner, but the damage had already been done.

In reply, the Outlaws were bowled out for 169, never quite recovering from a shaky start. Young left-arm spinner Charlie Barnard shone on debut, taking 3 for 23, including the key wicket of Henriques, who top-scored with 60 off 32 balls. Tom Aspinwall also impressed with 3 for 26, while overseas spinner Chris Green returned tidy figures of 2 for 28.

Nottinghamshire had chased down 226 against Birmingham Bears just 24 hours earlier but couldn’t replicate that magic this time around. They slipped to 21 for 2 in the third over after Aspinwall struck twice, removing both openers Joe Clarke and Lyndon James.

Henriques and Jack Haynes offered resistance with a brisk 61-run partnership, but when Haynes fell to Barnard and Henriques was trapped lbw soon after, the chase unraveled quickly. The Outlaws were eventually bowled out in the final over, falling well short of the target.

The result gave Lancashire their second consecutive win to start the campaign, while the Outlaws now have one win and one loss from their opening two games.
