Martin Andersson struck his third century of the season to rescue Derbyshire from early trouble on day one of their County Championship clash against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. His determined 105 helped Derbyshire post 348 for 8 at stumps after Indian legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal tore through the top order with a brilliant morning burst.
Chahal finished the day with 4 for 116, including three wickets in a devastating 11-ball spell that reduced Derbyshire to 98 for 5 before lunch. But Andersson, with support from Aneurin Donald (37), Zak Chappell (32), and a late partnership with teenage debutant Joe Wilkins, turned the tide for the visitors.
Electing to bat on a surface used recently for the Women’s Vitality Blast Tier Two Finals, Derbyshire found early scoring difficult against disciplined bowling. Caleb Jewell (16) was the first to fall, trapped lbw by George Scrimshaw. A 48-run stand between Luis Reece (39) and Harry Came (17) steadied the innings briefly, with Reece looking fluent against pace and spin alike.
But Chahal soon dismantled the middle order. He first trapped Came lbw with a delivery that turned sharply, then removed Reece—caught at short leg—and dismissed Brooke Guest, who edged a turning ball to the keeper. Justin Broad added to Derbyshire’s woes by dismissing veteran Wayne Madsen for a duck on his 250th first-class appearance, caught behind attempting a flick.
At 98 for 5, Derbyshire were in deep trouble, but Andersson and Donald launched a spirited counterattack after lunch. Their 102-run partnership was built on positive intent and smart strokeplay, with Andersson sweeping and cutting Chahal effectively. Donald contributed a steady 37, relying on reverse sweeps and careful placement before being bowled by Rob Keogh.
Chappell continued the momentum, putting on 61 with Andersson before Chahal returned to remove him with a sharp catch at slip off a reverse sweep. Andersson, unfazed, accelerated toward his century, driving Chahal for successive boundaries through extra cover before reaching his hundred off 148 balls, featuring 14 fours.
His innings came to an end soon after, edging behind off the new ball bowled by Luke Procter. But Derbyshire’s lower order showed resilience, with debutant Joe Wilkins and Ben Aitchison compiling an unbeaten 48-run stand for the ninth wicket. Wilkins impressed with composed drives and mature shot selection, ensuring the visitors finished the day on a high.
