Kent Rally to Set Up Tense Final Day as Glamorgan Chase 189 for Victory

Kent mounted a spirited second-innings recovery to set Glamorgan a tricky 189-run target, with the hosts stumbling early to 25 for 2 by stumps on day three in what promises to be a tense finale in Cardiff.

After being second-best for much of the match, Kent clawed back into contention thanks to a series of gritty contributions with the bat. Harry Finch top-scored with 68, while Grant Stewart added a crucial counter-attacking 63, helping Kent post 360 in their second innings despite the absence of the injured Joe Denly. That gave them a lead of 188 after trailing significantly on first innings.

Kent’s fightback began in earnest at 106 for 1 overnight. Ben Compton and Chris Benjamin set out cautiously, but Compton fell early in the morning session, attempting a paddle sweep that backfired, leaving him stranded on 48 — just shy of a half-century and his season milestone of 1000 runs.

Daniel Bell-Drummond made a solid start before a questionable caught-behind decision ended his innings. Benjamin (46) and Joey Evison (49) added valuable runs but failed to convert starts into big scores. Kent’s batters were often the architects of their own downfall, with a string of soft dismissals helping Glamorgan stay in the contest.

Eighth-choice bowler Kiran Carlson turned out to be Glamorgan’s surprise weapon, claiming 3 for 24 in a long, patient spell. Zain Ul Hassan and Timm van der Gugten also chipped in, the latter despite not bowling much due to injury.

A crucial 84-run stand between Finch and Evison was followed by a quickfire 68-run partnership between Finch and Stewart, the latter entertaining with a burst of three consecutive sixes off Carlson. However, once Stewart departed, Kent’s tail collapsed swiftly, with both Matt Parkinson and Matt Quinn recording pairs.

In reply, Glamorgan lost both openers in a fiery 14-over burst from Kent’s bowlers under gloomy skies. Wes Agar led the charge with aggressive pace, and with the pitch showing late signs of life, Glamorgan were left reeling at 25 for 2.

Uncertainty looms over the batting fitness of Chris Cooke and van der Gugten, who were off the field throughout day three, adding to Glamorgan's concerns ahead of their chase.

With 164 runs still needed and eight wickets in hand, all outcomes remain possible on the final day — a dramatic end beckons after a rollercoaster contest.
