The 2025 Men’s Asia Cup will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced on Saturday. The marquee clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan is scheduled for September 14, setting the stage for what could be up to three encounters between the two sides in this edition.
The tournament, now in its 17th edition, will feature eight teams for the first time, up from six in previous editions. It will be played in the T20I format, with an eye on preparations for the T20 World Cup. Group A consists of India, Pakistan, Oman, and hosts UAE, while Group B features Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong.
The tournament opener on September 9 will see Bangladesh take on Hong Kong. The top two teams from each group will advance to a Super Four stage, forming a new group of four. The top two teams from this stage will qualify for the final, set to be played on September 28.
India and Pakistan, who are in the same group, could potentially meet three times during the tournament—once in the group stage, once in the Super Four, and again in the final, should both teams progress. Despite their storied rivalry, an India-Pakistan final has never occurred in the history of the Asia Cup.
The announcement comes after the ACC’s annual general meeting in Dhaka, where the tournament schedule was finalised. The event had briefly faced uncertainty following a military skirmish between India and Pakistan in May. However, the tournament was confirmed to proceed in the UAE after agreements reached between the BCCI and PCB ensured neutral venues for bilateral matches involving India and Pakistan over the next three years.
Although India are the designated hosts for the 2025 edition, the entire tournament will be staged in the UAE as per the neutral venue agreement. A similar arrangement was followed during the 2025 Champions Trophy earlier this year, where India played all their matches in Dubai, including the final against hosts Pakistan, which India won.
India enter the tournament as defending champions, having beaten Sri Lanka in the 2023 final. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, were the last team to win the Asia Cup in the T20 format, defeating Pakistan in the 2022 final.
The India-Pakistan matches remain the most commercially significant fixtures in the competition, and their group placement all but guarantees a high-stakes showdown early in the tournament, with potential for more in the later stages.
