India have been dealt yet another injury setback ahead of the crucial fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, with allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy set to miss the remainder of the England tour due to a knee injury. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Reddy suffered the injury while training in the gym on Sunday, with scans revealing ligament damage.
Reddy’s unavailability further complicates India's selection puzzle as they prepare for the fourth Test at Old Trafford, starting July 23. With fast bowlers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh also in doubt due to injuries, India have already called up Haryana quick Anshul Kamboj as cover.
The timing of the injuries has raised concerns within the team management, especially as they look to level the five-Test series. England currently lead 2-1 after a narrow 22-run win at Lord’s.
Reddy, who did not feature in the series opener at Leeds, was drafted in for the second and third Tests. Though he had a quiet outing in Birmingham, his performance at Lord’s was more impactful. He removed both England openers — Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley — in the same over during the first innings and dismissed Crawley again in the second. He also contributed 30 and 13 runs with the bat, adding balance as a seam-bowling allrounder.
With Reddy ruled out, India may turn back to Shardul Thakur, who played the first Test, to maintain their preferred combination of a seam-bowling allrounder. Alternatively, India might consider bringing in wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, especially if Rishabh Pant, recovering from a finger injury, is limited to playing purely as a batter.
Reddy’s injury adds to India’s growing list of fitness concerns, including that of Jasprit Bumrah, who has featured in only two of the three Tests so far as part of a workload-management plan. However, with the series on the line and an eight-day break between the third and fourth Tests, team officials have indicated they are “leaning towards” bringing Bumrah back into the XI at Old Trafford.
India now face a selection dilemma with limited fit pace-bowling options, and with the series delicately poised, the team must quickly adapt to maintain their hopes of a series comeback.
