Mohammed Shami Named in Bengal's Probables for 2025-26 Domestic Season

Mohammed Shami has been included in Bengal's list of 50 probables for the 2025-26 domestic cricket season, marking a potential return to competitive action after a quiet IPL and a period on the sidelines. The seasoned fast bowler, who has not featured for India since the Champions Trophy earlier this year, could be in contention for a place in the East Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, which starts on August 28.

Shami, 34, last played competitively during IPL 2025 for Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he struggled to make an impact. He managed just six wickets in nine matches and conceded runs at an economy rate of 11.23 — far from his usual standards. This came on the heels of a strong but expensive showing at the Champions Trophy, where he was India's joint-highest wicket-taker with nine wickets in five matches, though he also had one of the higher economy rates at 5.68.

Shami’s recent career has been disrupted by injury setbacks, including ankle surgery and recurring knee issues. He returned to the Indian side in January 2024 for a T20I series against England, following a long break after the 2023 ODI World Cup final. His re-entry into domestic cricket came in late 2024 with Bengal during the Ranji Trophy, notably playing against Madhya Pradesh in Indore.

Despite recent form concerns, Shami’s inclusion in Bengal’s probables suggests selectors are keeping the door open for the experienced pacer to regain form and fitness. His international record remains impressive, with 64 Tests, 108 ODIs, and 25 T20Is under his belt.

The Bengal probables list features all the key domestic stalwarts, including Abhimanyu Easwaran, Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Abishek Porel.

If selected for the Duleep Trophy, Shami could use the tournament's traditional inter-zonal format as a launchpad for a return to the top level.
