Pratika Rawal Fined for 'Avoidable Physical Contact' in First ODI Against England

India opener Pratika Rawal has been fined 10% of her match fee and received one demerit point following two incidents of “avoidable physical contact” during the first ODI against England at the Ageas Bowl, which India won by four wickets.

The infractions occurred during India’s successful chase of 259 runs on Tuesday. In the 18th over, Rawal made contact with England fast bowler Lauren Filer while running a single. The second incident followed in the very next over, when Rawal brushed past Sophie Ecclestone after being bowled for 36 off 51 deliveries.

Match officials deemed both incidents breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct, specifically a Level 1 offence, which pertains to "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players in the course of play." Rawal accepted the charge and the sanction proposed by the match referee.

Despite the controversy, Rawal played a pivotal role in setting up India’s win. She added 48 runs with Smriti Mandhana for the opening wicket and another 46 with Harleen Deol for the second. The chase was ultimately sealed by a 90-run partnership between Jemimah Rodrigues (48) and Deepti Sharma, who remained unbeaten on 62.

England were also penalized for a slow over-rate and fined 5% of their match fee after being found one over short of the target time. Although the full 50 overs were not required, India achieved the target with ten balls to spare.

The second ODI will be played at Lord’s on Saturday, followed by the third and final match of the series at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday. India currently leads the series 1–0, having also clinched the preceding T20I series 3–2.
