Veteran India batter Veda Krishnamurthy has officially retired from professional cricket, bringing down the curtain on a career that spanned over a decade. Her last international appearance came in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final in Melbourne in March 2020.
The 32-year-old leaves behind a legacy defined by aggressive middle-order batting and key contributions during India’s landmark campaigns. She was a pivotal part of India’s journey to the 2017 ODI World Cup final, where the team finished runners-up in a nail-biting contest against England.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Veda reflected on her journey:
"Cricket gave me more than just a career. It gave me a sense of who I am. It taught me how to fight, how to fall and how to keep showing up. It's now time to give back. Whatever the role, whatever the way, I'm here for the game. I truly believe my second innings will be just as meaningful."
Veda retires with 48 One-Day Internationals and 76 T20I appearances for India. She scored 829 ODI runs, including eight half-centuries, beginning with a fifty on debut against England in 2012 at Derby. Her most iconic performance came in the 2017 World Cup, when she smashed a 45-ball 70 against New Zealand to help India secure a semi-final berth.
In the T20I format, she tallied 875 runs across 63 innings with two fifties. Domestically, she captained both Karnataka and Railways with distinction. Under her leadership, Karnataka finished as runners-up in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy in consecutive seasons (2021–22 and 2022–23), narrowly losing to Railways in the 2023 final.
Though Veda went unsold in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL), she made her WPL debut in 2024, representing Gujarat Giants in four matches.
Veda also made her mark overseas, joining the Hobart Hurricanes in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) in 2017, becoming one of the few Indian women to feature in the league at the time.
With her playing days now over, Veda Krishnamurthy is set to embark on a new chapter—one she promises will be just as committed to the game she loves.
