Australia Edges Past Pakistan in Thrilling ODI Opener

Australia continued its dominance over Pakistan with a narrow two-wicket victory in the first ODI at the MCG on Monday, extending its remarkable record to 27 wins in the last 28 completed matches against Pakistan at home. Despite the outcome, the match showcased a spirited fightback from Pakistan, creating a thrilling atmosphere for fans.

Chasing a modest target of 204, Australia appeared to be cruising at 139 for 3 by the 20th over. However, the game took an unexpected turn when Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed Josh Inglis, leading to a rapid collapse. In the next over, Haris Rauf struck twice, sending Marnus Labuschagne back to the pavilion with a leading edge and then tempting Glenn Maxwell into a rash shot that resulted in another wicket. In a matter of five balls, Australia lost three wickets without adding a run, shifting the momentum firmly in Pakistan's favor.

Rauf expressed his team's determination, noting their plan to bowl short and the success it brought them. "We were all trying our best, whether in the field or with the ball," he said. "We had a plan to bowl short from my end. We had success; we took a few wickets this way."

Despite Pakistan's resurgence, Australia managed to maintain their composure. Pat Cummins, returning to ODI cricket, played a pivotal role, ensuring he was present at the finish to hit the winning runs. His steady performance was crucial in sealing the victory, even as Pakistan continued to apply pressure with tight bowling.

Rauf reflected on Pakistan's mistakes, particularly in conceding 21 extras compared to Australia’s mere four. "We did give away extras but when you attack, you have to accept that these things happen," he noted. "We know these little things make an impact."

The match also brought to mind Pakistan's recent near-misses at the MCG, including heart-wrenching losses to India in high-stakes matches. "We have memories on this ground which we remember," Rauf acknowledged. "Sometimes the result doesn't go your way, and you have to accept that. You then try to learn from those failures."

As the series progresses, Pakistan will seek to build on this performance and address their shortcomings, while Australia aims to continue their dominance. The thrilling nature of the contest has set the stage for an exciting series ahead.
