Boult's Fiery Spell, Pooran and Monank’s Fifties Seal Comfortable Win for MI New York

MI New York kept their slim hopes of reaching the MLC 2025 playoffs alive with a dominant eight-wicket win over the struggling Los Angeles Knight Riders on Thursday. Trent Boult’s devastating opening spell and fifties from Monank Patel and Nicholas Pooran were the highlights of a one-sided contest.

Chasing a modest target of 155, MI New York rode on a fluent 112-run second-wicket stand between Monank and Pooran to cruise to victory with 13 balls to spare. Pooran remained unbeaten on 62 off 47 balls, while Monank contributed a well-paced 56 from 44 deliveries.

Earlier, Boult’s fiery opening burst dismantled the LAKR top order. The left-arm quick struck with the very first ball of the match, clean-bowling Unmukt Chand with a sharp inswinger. He then accounted for Andre Russell and Andre Fletcher in his next two overs, finishing his opening spell with 3 wickets – all bowled – inside the powerplay.

Boult returned to dismiss Sherfane Rutherford in the 19th over to complete his four-wicket haul, ending with figures of 4 for 17. Rutherford had been the lone resistance in an otherwise dismal LAKR innings, smashing 86 off 44 balls with five fours and six sixes. No other batter managed to pass 20, and LAKR stumbled to 154 for 8 in their 20 overs.

In response, MI New York lost Quinton de Kock early to Sunil Narine, but the duo of Monank and Pooran ensured there were no further hiccups. While Monank provided stability with his composed innings, Pooran accelerated after a slow start to guide the chase comfortably. Kieron Pollard added the finishing touches with a quickfire 14* off six balls, including two sixes.

This result pushes LAKR to the brink of elimination from playoff contention, while MI New York stay alive in the race, albeit needing other results to go their way.
