Bangladesh Collapse to 7 for 5 as Taskin Ahmed Admits: "We Panicked a Bit"

Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed admitted that panic set in during a shocking batting collapse that saw the visitors lose seven wickets for five runs in the first ODI against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The collapse turned what looked like a comfortable chase into a stunning defeat.

Chasing 245, Bangladesh were cruising at 96 for 1 in the 17th over, with Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto in control. But a direct hit run-out of Shanto by debutant Milan Rathnayake changed the momentum of the game dramatically. What followed was a dramatic implosion as Bangladesh slumped to 105 for 8, ultimately falling well short.

Turning Point: From Comfort to Collapse

“I was expecting we would win with five to seven overs in hand,” Taskin said after the match. “We had a great start – 100 runs in 16 overs. Then 100 for 2 and 107 for 8 – that was very costly. Those two wickets in one over by [Wanindu] Hasaranga were the turning point.”

Hasaranga dismissed Litton Das and the set Tanzid Hasan in the same over, effectively dismantling Bangladesh's top order and halting any momentum.

Panic and Pressure

Taskin acknowledged the psychological pressure that set in after the run-out and sudden dismissals.

“We panicked a bit,” he said. “After the great start, we were a bit relaxed, thinking everything was going our way. Then suddenly, that run-out and one of our set batters, Tamim [Tanzid], got out. We didn’t play our natural game, and under pressure, we collapsed.”

Jaker Ali Shines Amidst the Ruins

The lone bright spot for Bangladesh in the latter stages of the innings was Jaker Ali, who made a composed 51 off 64 balls.

“When Jaker got set, he was batting very well,” Taskin noted. “If we had two or three more batters left with him, we could have won. The wicket wasn’t that bad – we just didn’t bat well under pressure. That was our failure.”

What’s Next

The loss puts Bangladesh on the back foot in the three-match ODI series. With their top order showing promise but the middle and lower order collapsing under pressure, the visitors will need to regroup quickly ahead of the second match.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will be buoyed by the fightback led by Hasaranga and Rathnayake, and will look to build on the momentum at home.
