Hetmyer’s Brilliance Powers Seattle Orcas to Third Consecutive Win in MLC 2025

Shimron Hetmyer produced another masterclass in finishing, blasting an unbeaten 78 off just 37 deliveries to guide the Seattle Orcas to a thrilling four-wicket win over the San Francisco Unicorns in Lauderhill. With this victory, the Orcas secured their third straight win in Major League Cricket 2025, while the Unicorns suffered their second consecutive defeat.

Chasing 169, the Orcas found themselves in deep trouble at 56 for 4 in the tenth over. However, Hetmyer once again stood tall under pressure, continuing his red-hot form that has already seen scores of 97* and 64* in previous matches. His latest innings, laced with clean hitting and calm under pressure, ensured Seattle got over the line with three balls to spare.

The chase got off to a shaky start as Xavier Bartlett dismissed Steven Taylor for a ten-ball duck and then sent back Kyle Mayers in quick succession. Shayan Jahangir and Sikandar Raza attempted to stabilize the innings with a 38-run stand, but both fell off consecutive deliveries in the tenth over, pushing the Orcas to the brink.

Enter Hetmyer.

The left-hander got going almost immediately, hammering two sixes in his first three balls. He reached his half-century off just 23 deliveries and never allowed the required run rate to spiral out of control. Even as partners came and went, Hetmyer remained composed, building small but vital partnerships with Heinrich Klaasen and Aaron Jones.

With 30 needed off the final three overs, Hetmyer launched Brody Couch over deep backward square leg, then took on Bartlett to bring the equation down to eight in the last over. He sealed the deal with style, sending a Romario Shepherd delivery 102 metres over long-on, followed by a couple to finish the game.

Earlier, the Unicorns posted 168 for 5 after being asked to bat first. They were rocked early when Harmeet Singh dismissed Matthew Short in the opening over. Jake Fraser-McGurk and Finn Allen then stitched together a 49-run partnership off 31 balls, showing early promise. However, Ayan Desai and Sikandar Raza pegged them back with timely breakthroughs.

The standout for the Unicorns was Sanjay Krishnamurthi, who struck a fluent 41 off 28 balls, including two sixes each off Waqar Salamkheil and Raza. But the Orcas’ bowlers pulled things back, conceding just 34 runs in the next seven overs and keeping the Unicorns in check until a couple of late sixes from Shepherd gave them a fighting total.

It looked like it might be enough — until Hetmyer turned on the magic once again.

Seattle Orcas now rise with momentum, having turned their season around after five consecutive losses. For the Unicorns, who had enjoyed a six-match winning streak, back-to-back defeats have suddenly made things interesting in the MLC 2025 playoff race.
