Ben Stokes delivered a crucial breakthrough just before tea on day one of the second Test at Edgbaston, dismissing the in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal for 87 to end a solid middle session for India. The visitors went into the interval on 182 for 3, building a strong foundation despite key changes to their lineup.
Jaiswal, who has now scored at least a half-century in all seven of his Tests against England, looked well-set for a sixth Test hundred before slashing at a wide delivery from Stokes, edging through to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. His knock, filled with 13 boundaries, anchored India’s innings after the early loss of KL Rahul.
Rahul struggled for fluency, scoring just 2 off 26 balls before being trapped by Chris Woakes in a miserly new-ball spell that read 1 for 15 from seven overs, including four consecutive maidens. Woakes was unlucky not to add to his tally, with two LBW appeals — against Jaiswal on 12 and Karun Nair on 5 — being turned down and upheld on review as umpire’s calls.
Brydon Carse claimed the second wicket of the day, removing Nair for 31 just before lunch. Nair, promoted to No. 3, had helped rebuild the innings with Jaiswal in an 80-run stand before falling to a well-directed hard length delivery, which he edged to Harry Brook at second slip.
Jaiswal reached his fifty off 59 balls, capitalizing on a loose spell from Josh Tongue, who was punished for wayward bowling. The left-hander struck three boundaries in Tongue’s third over, followed by another hat-trick of fours in his sixth and final over. A hook shot took him to 49 before he leapt into a powerful cut to raise his half-century.
Jaiswal continued to accumulate confidently through the middle session, driving Carse through cover and later guiding Tongue past the slip cordon. However, his dismissal to Stokes just before the interval halted his charge toward another hundred.
At tea, Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 42, while Rishabh Pant was on 14*, having struck the first six of the innings with a lofted shot off Shoaib Bashir.
India, trailing 1-0 in the five-match series, made several changes to their XI, with Jasprit Bumrah rested and Akash Deep, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Washington Sundar coming into the side. Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur were dropped after the defeat at Headingley.
India will look to build on this platform in the final session, hoping that Gill and Pant can steer them toward a commanding first-innings total.
