Carson and Lenham Heroics Steer Sussex to Thrilling Win Over Kent in One-Day Cup

A sensational, unbroken eighth-wicket partnership between Jack Carson and Archie Lenham guided Sussex to a dramatic three-wicket victory over Kent in their Metro Bank One-Day Cup clash at Arundel.

Chasing 288, Sussex looked down and out at 200 for 7 in the 38th over, despite a solid fifth-wicket stand of 90 between Oli Carter (68) and John Simpson (50). With 88 still required and only three wickets in hand, few would have predicted what followed.

Carson, who struck his maiden List A half-century, finished unbeaten on 50 from 43 balls, including five boundaries and a six. Lenham added a blistering 45 not out off 38 deliveries, laced with six fours and a six, as the pair turned the match on its head with an 88-run partnership in just 11 overs.

With 22 runs needed from the final three overs, Lenham seized control, smashing Kent pacer Michael Cohen for 14 off three balls — a six down the ground, followed by two crisp boundaries. That left Sussex needing just five off the final two overs, and Carson calmly struck back-to-back fours off Fred Klaassen to seal the win with 10 balls to spare.

Earlier, Kent had looked poised for victory thanks to a strong bowling performance by Cohen. Making his debut for the county after a delayed start due to injury, the South African-born left-armer — who is eligible to play for France — claimed 4 for 65. He made early inroads by removing Danial Ibrahim lbw and then dismissing Tom Haines and Hudson-Prentice in quick succession. Later, he returned to break the Carter-Simpson partnership by removing the former for 68.

Despite their bowling efforts, Kent will rue missed chances after posting a competitive 287 for 9. Their innings was built around several solid partnerships, though frequent wickets disrupted any chance of a late onslaught.

Joey Evison top-scored with a fluent 52 off 54 balls, including 10 boundaries. He and Chris Benjamin (who added 81 for the third wicket) were both dismissed in successive overs due to brilliant fielding — a diving one-handed catch by Danny Lamb and a sharp grab at short midwicket by Carter.

Captain Harry Finch (a former Sussex player) added 89 for the fifth wicket with Ekansh Singh, the England U19 centurion, before further contributions from Jack Leaning and debutant Mo Rizvi helped Kent to a strong total.

For Sussex, Fynn Hudson-Prentice took 3 for 65 but also chipped in with a quick cameo with the bat. Ari Karvelas and Henry Crocombe also picked up early wickets to peg Kent back at the start.

The win marks Sussex's first victory of the campaign, bouncing back from a defeat to Durham, while Kent — winners of the 2022 edition — now face pressure to regroup after letting a dominant position slip away.

Score Summary:

  • Kent 287/9 (Evison 52, Finch 48, Hudson-Prentice 3-65)

  • Sussex 288/7 (Carter 68, Carson 50*, Lenham 45*, Cohen 4-65)

Sussex won by 3 wickets with 10 balls to spare.
