In one of the most dramatic turnarounds in IPL history, Punjab Kings (PBKS) successfully defended a paltry 111 to defeat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 16 runs in Kolkata, marking the lowest successful defence in IPL history.
Just days after failing to defend 245 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, PBKS bounced back with a stunning bowling performance. Yuzvendra Chahal was the architect of KKR’s collapse, picking up 4 for 28 in a spell that turned the game on its head. KKR, cruising at 62 for 2 in their chase of 112, lost their last eight wickets for just 33 runs to be bowled out for 95.
Chahal’s brilliance came in the middle overs after a strong start by KKR, who had recovered from 7 for 2 thanks to a 55-run stand between Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Venkatesh Iyer. However, once Chahal removed Iyer and triggered a collapse, the pressure mounted. Despite Andre Russell smashing 16 runs off Chahal’s final over, the wristspinner finished with match-defining figures of 4-0-28-4.
Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh then applied the finishing touches with a burst of short-pitched bowling that rattled the KKR lower order. Jansen ended with 3 for 17, while Arshdeep chipped in with crucial breakthroughs to close out a memorable win.
Earlier, PBKS’s innings had been a rollercoaster. After a solid start of 39 without loss, they slipped to 54 for 4 and eventually folded for 111. Prabhsimran Singh top-scored with 30, while debutant Avanish Arya added a promising 22. For KKR, Harshit Rana (3-25), Sunil Narine (2-14), and Varun Chakravarthy (2-21) were the standouts with the ball.
The match, played on a surface offering considerable assistance to seamers and spinners alike, saw frequent momentum shifts and tested both teams' ability to adapt under pressure.
With this remarkable win, PBKS have now climbed into the top four, while KKR will be left ruing a missed opportunity in a chase that, at one point, seemed all but over.
