A solid 123-run third-wicket partnership between Jordan Cox and Paul Walter put Essex in a strong position against Nottinghamshire on day two of their County Championship Division One fixture at Trent Bridge. Essex ended the day on 301 for 5, trailing Nottinghamshire’s first-innings total of 347 by just 46 runs.
After Nottinghamshire wrapped up their innings within the first 30 minutes of the morning session, thanks to Kyle Verreynne’s brilliant unbeaten 128, Essex responded with a determined batting performance led by Cox and Walter.
Jordan Cox, who missed out on a Test debut last November due to a thumb fracture, played a fluent innings of 82, continuing his excellent domestic form. Having already notched up a score of 117 earlier this season against Surrey, the 24-year-old once again showed composure and class at the crease. His innings, laced with crisp strokeplay, came to an end on the first ball of the final session when he feathered a leg-side delivery to the keeper.
Cox now boasts 21 half-centuries in his first-class career, with eight converted into hundreds, and looks set to push for England selection again this summer.
Paul Walter, continuing his stint as opener in the absence of Dean Elgar (away on paternity leave), struck a muscular 76. He took a particular liking to teenager Farhan Ahmed, launching a six and four to midwicket before slicing one to slip while attempting another aggressive stroke. Walter had earlier made 95 in his only other innings this season, reinforcing his value at the top of the order.
The visitors had a shaky start to their innings in the morning. Youngster Charles Allison, playing only his second Championship innings, was dismissed for 11 by Fergus O'Neill, while Brett Hutton produced a superb first-ball yorker to remove Tom Westley for 5. Essex were 54 for 2 at lunch but recovered strongly through Cox and Walter.
Lyndon James struck twice in the evening session, removing Cox and Michael Pepper (26), who cut a short ball to backward point. Despite those breakthroughs, Essex held firm, with Noah Thain (21*) and Matt Critchley (50*) guiding the side safely to stumps.
Nottinghamshire’s total of 347 was underpinned by a masterful century from Kyle Verreynne, who remained unbeaten on 128. His knock, which followed Test centuries for South Africa against three different nations, took his tally to 376 runs in five innings for Notts this season — with just one dismissal.
Essex bowler Simon Cook, who earlier dropped Verreynne on 33, redeemed himself by picking up 4 for 44, including the final two wickets of the innings. Farhan Ahmed was caught at third slip for 31, and Dillon Pennington was bowled for 1.
Though the pitch remains good for batting, some deliveries from the Stuart Broad End have started behaving unpredictably — either keeping low or bouncing sharply. Batters were seen frequently checking the surface, indicating a possible challenge ahead as the match progresses.
With both sides still in contention, day three promises to be a crucial one in shaping the outcome of what has already been an engrossing contest at Trent Bridge.
