Cricket will make a historic return to the Olympic Games for the first time in 128 years, with the LA 2028 edition featuring both men's and women's T20 competitions. The event is set to begin on July 12, with medal matches scheduled for July 20 and 29, all hosted at the newly constructed Fairgrounds Stadium in Pomona, approximately 50 kilometers east of Los Angeles.
The tournament will feature six teams in both men's and women's categories, totaling 180 players, with each squad permitted to name 15 players. All matches will follow the T20 format.
Matches will be played in double-header formats, with no games scheduled on July 14 and 21. Each match day will see games starting at 9:00 AM and 6:30 PM local time, including the medal matches.
The venue, officially known as Fairplex, is a sprawling 500-acre complex with a long history of hosting major events, including the LA County Fair since 1922.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her excitement, highlighting the community impact of the upcoming Games. "When the world comes here for these Games, we will highlight every neighborhood as we host a Games for all and work to ensure it leaves a monumental legacy," she said. She also noted that over one million enrollments have already taken place through PlayLA, a community sports initiative tied to the Games.
Cricket’s only previous Olympic appearance was in 1900, when Great Britain defeated France in a two-day match to win the gold medal. The sport’s reintroduction marks another milestone in its global expansion. In recent years, cricket has featured in major multi-sport events, including the Commonwealth Games (2022) and the Asian Games (2010, 2014, 2023). The United States also co-hosted the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup, with matches held in Grand Prairie, Lauderhill, and New York.
The inclusion of cricket at LA28 is seen as a major step toward globalizing the sport, offering it a unique opportunity to captivate a broader audience on one of the world’s biggest sporting stages.
