David Wiese Named Captain of St Lucia Kings for CPL 2025

Defending champions St Lucia Kings have appointed David Wiese as their captain for the upcoming 2025 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season, which begins next week.

Wiese, a veteran allrounder and long-time member of the franchise, replaces Faf du Plessis, who led the Kings to their maiden CPL title last year. Du Plessis has opted out of this season’s CPL to initially participate in The Hundred, but has since withdrawn from that competition as well due to a groin surgery.

Wiese expressed gratitude and excitement following the announcement.

“I am absolutely humbled to be named your captain,” he said in a message to fans. “This season, we will be playing with passion, heart and unity… Let’s paint Saint Lucia blue. Let’s make this a special season.”

Wiese Brings Experience and Form

Wiese has been part of the St Lucia Kings setup since 2021 and has featured in 26 matches for the team. He played a vital role in their championship run last season, scoring 121 runs at a blistering strike rate of 168.05 and averaging over 40. With the ball, he was equally impactful, picking up 13 wickets at an economy of 8.34.

Head coach and franchise icon Daren Sammy praised the appointment, calling Wiese “a part of the family.”

“He has been with us for a number of years and has put on some excellent performances,” Sammy said. “We cannot wait to start our first home game on August 23rd. We know the Saint Lucia Kings have the best fans — come out and support our new captain and team.”

A Milestone for Associate Cricket

Wiese’s appointment marks a historic moment as he becomes the first player from an ICC Associate Member nation to captain a franchise in a major T20 league run by a Test-playing country. Although Wiese represented South Africa from 2013 to 2016, he played international cricket for Namibia from 2021 until his retirement in 2024. He has previously captained in one-off matches for Lahore Qalandars (PSL) and Northern Superchargers (The Hundred).

Kings Eye Another Title Run

St Lucia Kings are aiming to defend their title with a refreshed squad that includes newly signed Australian power-hitter Tim David, who was selected as their first-round draft pick.

The CPL 2025 season kicks off on August 14, with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots taking on Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. St Lucia Kings begin their campaign on August 17, facing the Falcons in North Sound.

The Kings' first home game will be played on August 23 at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, where Wiese will lead the side in front of their passionate home crowd.
