Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) mystery spinner, Digvesh Rathi, has been making waves in IPL 2025 with his impressive bowling performances, earning praise for his skills and work ethic. However, his unique “notebook” celebration has sparked controversy, drawing fines and demerit points from the IPL governing body.

Rathi, who idolizes Sunil Narine, has been a revelation with the ball, showcasing exceptional control and precision. In LSG’s recent match against Mumbai Indians (MI), Rathi’s figures stood out: 1 for 21 in four overs, helping his side defend a challenging total of 203. His economy rate in the tournament is an impressive 7.62, with six wickets from four matches.

“I fell in love with bowling after watching Sunil Narine bowl,” Rathi shared after being named Player of the Match. “My style is aggressive, aiming to take wickets and stay calm under pressure, just like Narine.”

Rathi’s strength lies in his ability to maintain a good length, with 80 of his 96 deliveries this season landing on a good length or just short of it. Against MI, he bowled 19 such deliveries, conceding just 95 runs. His carrom ball accounted for Naman Dhir’s wicket, demonstrating his skillful variation.

LSG head coach Justin Langer lauded Rathi’s dedication: “If he could bowl for 16 hours a day, he would. He bowls everywhere—at breakfast, in the shower, corridor of the hotel. His love for bowling is evident, and it’s paying off.”

However, Rathi’s flamboyant celebrations have drawn criticism. After his notebook celebration against Punjab Kings, he was fined for physical contact with Priyansh Arya. A similar fine followed after the MI game, even though no contact was made. With three demerit points now, another will result in a one-match suspension.

Despite the controversies, his teammates support his expressive style. Shardul Thakur emphasized, “We need characters like Rathi—fearless and expressive. He always delivers for the team.”

Rathi’s next challenge awaits against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Tuesday, where he will face his idol, Sunil Narine. Langer hinted at the excitement: “It’s going to be interesting watching him bowl against Narine. He’s got a bright future ahead.”

As Rathi continues to mesmerize with his bowling, the cricket world watches with bated breath, eager to see what this young talent does next.
