Duleep Trophy 2025-26: Shardul Thakur to Lead Star-Studded West Zone Squad

Duleep Trophy 2025-26: Shardul Thakur to Lead Star-Studded West Zone Squad

India allrounder Shardul Thakur has been named captain of the West Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025-26, scheduled to begin on August 28. The 15-member team boasts a strong Mumbai contingent, with seven players from the city making the cut, including India internationals Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, and Sarfaraz Khan.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, another key member of the Indian setup, adds further firepower to the side. Wicketkeeping duties will be shared between Saurashtra’s Harvik Desai and Maharashtra’s Saurabh Nawale.

The Duleep Trophy returns to the traditional six-team zonal format this season after being contested between India A, B, C, and D teams last year. State selectors from each zone have been tasked with forming their respective squads for what will be the curtain-raiser to the 2025-26 domestic season.

South Zone, the last champions under the zonal format in 2023-24, and West Zone have earned direct berths into the semi-finals, to be held in Bengaluru.

Notably, veterans Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have been left out of the West Zone squad. The selection was overseen by a five-member committee led by Mumbai's Sanjay Patil, with representatives from Baroda, Maharashtra, Saurashtra, and Gujarat. Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Abhay Hadap served as the convener.

Earlier this week, South Zone announced their squad with Tilak Verma named captain.
