Durham have bolstered their depleted bowling ranks with the signing of South African fast bowler Codi Yusuf, as they look to manage a growing list of injuries in their seam attack early in the Rothesay County Championship season.
The Division One side is currently without the services of Brydon Carse, Sam Conners, Paul Coughlin, Daniel Hogg, Luke Robinson, Stanley McAlindon, and James Minto. They were dealt another blow during their second-round clash against Warwickshire when South Africa international David Bedingham suffered a fractured toe.
While Bedingham’s injury is not expected to sideline him long-term — with Durham hopeful he’ll return in time for their fixture against Hampshire in early May — his absence opens up a temporary overseas slot, which Yusuf will now fill alongside Australian pacer Brendan Doggett.
Yusuf, 27, joins Durham for six rounds of the County Championship, beginning with their match against Worcestershire this Friday. He will also be available for the group stages of the Vitality Blast. The right-arm seamer has yet to make his international debut for South Africa but impressed for the South Africa A side with a five-wicket haul against England Lions in December.
Since making his first-class debut in 2019, Yusuf has claimed 88 wickets at an average of 29.14. He is coming off his most successful domestic season to date, having taken 26 wickets in seven matches for the Lions. In T20s, he has 36 wickets at 29.66 and has featured for the Paarl Royals in the SA20 league.
Durham's director of cricket, Marcus North, expressed his satisfaction at securing Yusuf’s services, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen the bowling unit amid the injury crisis.
"Codi joins us on the back of a successful domestic season in South Africa and will strengthen our bowling attack over the coming months," North said. "With a number of our seam bowlers not available due to injury it was important we acted quickly, and we have done that with the addition of Codi Yusuf."
For Yusuf, the signing marks the fulfilment of a long-held ambition to play county cricket.
"I just want to thank Durham for giving me the opportunity to be part of their team for this season," Yusuf said. "It's been a dream to play county cricket for me, so I find it extremely special to be part of Durham.
"I know there are some special players in the changing room as well so I'm immensely excited to meet the players and be part of what looks like a very great environment."
