England face an anxious wait over the fitness of offspinner Shoaib Bashir after he injured his left little finger on the third day of the third Test against India at Lord’s.
Bashir sustained the injury while attempting to take a sharp return catch off a powerful drive from Ravindra Jadeja. The ball struck his left hand firmly, forcing him to immediately signal for medical attention before walking off the field. Joe Root completed the remainder of the over.
The injury appeared to be a dislocation, and although there were initial hopes that Bashir would return to bowl in the evening session, he did not reappear and instead remained on the sidelines with substitute fielders. Ahead of play on the fourth morning, he bowled in the nets with heavy strapping on his fourth and fifth fingers, suggesting a degree of recovery, but concerns remain.
In a statement issued on Sunday morning, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said:
“Following his left little finger injury, Shoaib Bashir continues to be monitored and is expected to bowl in the fourth innings of this Test. A decision on whether he will bat in the third innings will be made in due course. His involvement in the fourth Test at Emirates Old Trafford will be assessed at the end of the match.”
Bashir has claimed nine wickets at an average of 59.44 in the series so far, including the crucial dismissal of KL Rahul on day three at Lord’s. His potential absence for the next Test in Manchester could force England to rethink their spin options.
Should Bashir be ruled out, England may turn to one of Liam Dawson, Jack Leach, or Rehan Ahmed. Head coach Brendon McCullum has confirmed that Jacob Bethell, while part of the squad, is viewed primarily as a batting option and not as a lower-order allrounder.
England will continue to monitor Bashir's progress closely as the Test reaches its conclusion and decisions loom for the remainder of the series.
