Rahane Reiterates Desire for Test Comeback Despite Selector Silence

Veteran India batter Ajinkya Rahane has made it clear he has not given up hope of a Test comeback, despite being out of the national side for over two years and receiving no communication from the selectors.

In a candid interview with Sky Sports in London, the 37-year-old reaffirmed his passion for red-ball cricket and expressed disappointment over the lack of dialogue with the selection panel.

“I still want to play Test cricket,” Rahane said. “I’m really passionate about it. I’m enjoying my cricket at the moment. I carried my training gear here just to stay fit. Our domestic season is starting, so preparations have begun.”

Rahane, who last played a Test in early 2023, has been leading Mumbai in domestic cricket and continues to be a key figure in Indian first-class cricket. Under his leadership, Mumbai clinched their 42nd Ranji Trophy title in the 2023–24 season and were runners-up in 2024–25. Rahane also led Mumbai to a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) title, highlighting his continued relevance in the domestic setup.

In the 2024–25 Ranji season, Rahane scored 467 runs in 14 innings at an average of 35.92, including a century and a fifty. He also enjoyed a productive IPL 2025 season with Kolkata Knight Riders, finishing as their top run-scorer with 390 runs at a strike rate of 147.27, though the team ended in a disappointing eighth place.

When asked about the increased emphasis on younger players in the wake of the Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Rahane admitted the competition is tough but stressed that he is focused on what he can control.

“Frankly, I tried to have conversations with the selectors, but things like that are out of my hands,” he said. “I got no response. All I can do is keep playing cricket, enjoy the game, and give my best every time I step on the field. I love playing Test cricket — it’s a passion. The love for the game keeps me going.”

With Shubman Gill now leading the side and taking over Kohli’s No. 4 spot, and Rishabh Pant cementing his place at No. 5, the competition for middle-order roles has intensified. KL Rahul remains the only player from the previous generation consistently featuring in India’s red-ball plans.

While a national recall may appear unlikely for Rahane at this stage, his continued domestic performances and unwavering dedication keep the door open — however slightly — for a potential fairytale return.
