Finn Allen Ruled Out of MLC Playoffs and Zimbabwe Tri-Series with Foot Injury

New Zealand opener Finn Allen has been ruled out of the upcoming MLC 2025 playoffs and the Zimbabwe T20I tri-series after sustaining a foot injury while playing for the San Francisco Unicorns. The injury comes as a major blow to both the Unicorns and New Zealand, with Allen being a key performer in recent weeks.

Allen picked up the injury during the Unicorns' final league-stage match against the Los Angeles Knight Riders in Lauderhill on July 6. Although he played the game and was dismissed for just 4 in the opening over of a steep 244-run chase, the extent of the injury became clear in the aftermath.

A statement from New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed that Allen will return home for further medical assessment, after which a detailed recovery plan will be drawn up. His replacement for the Zimbabwe tri-series, featuring South Africa and Zimbabwe, will be announced in due course. New Zealand are expected to arrive in Harare on Thursday, ahead of their first match against South Africa on July 16.

Allen's absence is particularly significant for the San Francisco Unicorns, who face MI New York in the Eliminator on Wednesday. The explosive opener has been a standout performer, scoring 333 runs in nine matches, including a sensational 151 — the highest individual score of the tournament — against Washington Freedom in the season opener.

In another setback for the Unicorns, West Indies allrounder Romario Shepherd has also left the squad to rejoin the Guyana Amazon Warriors for the Global Super League. Shepherd has been crucial with both bat and ball, picking up eight wickets in five games and contributing vital runs in the lower order.

The Unicorns have chosen not to name replacements for either Allen or Shepherd, meaning they will head into the playoffs without two of their most influential players as they chase their first MLC title.
