Glenn Phillips Ruled Out of IPL 2025 Due to Groin Injury

Gujarat Titans (GT) have been dealt another blow in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, with New Zealand's Glenn Phillips ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a groin injury. The franchise confirmed that Phillips has returned to New Zealand for recovery, and no replacement has been named yet.

Phillips sustained the injury while fielding as a substitute during GT's clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 6 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. He came on after the fifth over of the SRH innings but limped off minutes later after attempting a throw to the wicketkeeper’s end. He was seen clutching his groin immediately after the effort and had to be helped off the field by GT support staff.

“Looks like he might have pulled his groin while getting that throw away,” read the live commentary of the incident. Phillips had not featured in GT’s starting XI in any of the matches before the injury.

This is GT’s second setback this month, following the departure of Kagiso Rabada on April 3, who left the team to attend to an “important personal matter.” Rabada's return remains uncertain, and the team has also not named a replacement for him.

The Gujarat Titans had signed only seven overseas players for IPL 2025. With Phillips and Rabada now unavailable, their overseas roster is down to five. Among the remaining foreign players, Jos Buttler, Rashid Khan, and Sherfane Rutherford have featured in all games so far. Afghanistan allrounder Karim Janat and South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee are the other two. However, Coetzee is still recovering from an injury that kept him out of both the SA20 and the Champions Trophy earlier this year.

Despite the personnel setbacks, Gujarat Titans are currently leading the IPL 2025 points table with four wins from five matches.
