Harry Brook Becomes No. 1 Test Batter, Shubman Gill Soars to No. 6 in ICC Rankings

England’s Harry Brook has risen to the pinnacle of the ICC Test batting rankings, displacing teammate Joe Root to claim the No. 1 spot. Brook's match-defining 158 in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test has earned him the top position, with 18 points separating him from second-placed Root.

Brook’s rapid ascent caps off a stellar run of form, particularly in the recent Test where he rescued England from a precarious 84 for 5 in partnership with Jamie Smith. The wicketkeeper-batter also benefitted from his contributions, climbing 16 places to break into the top 10 at No. 10, thanks to scores of 184* and 88.

India's Test captain Shubman Gill also made a significant leap in the rankings. His sublime knocks of 269 and 161 in the second Test against England powered India to a dominant 336-run victory and saw him jump 15 places to a career-best No. 6, with 807 rating points — his highest to date.

The updated Test batting rankings now feature Kane Williamson at No. 3, Yashasvi Jaiswal at No. 4, and Steven Smith at No. 5, making it a competitive top six.

Elsewhere, South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder surged up the rankings after his record-breaking unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe. The allrounder jumped 34 spots to reach No. 22 among Test batters. He also climbed to No. 3 in the allrounders' rankings — up 12 places — behind Ravindra Jadeja, who continues to lead that category.

In the ODI format, Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka and Kusal Mendis have been rewarded for their consistent performances in the 2-1 series win over Bangladesh. Mendis climbed ten spots to break into the top 10, following a series tally of 225 runs including knocks of 124 and 56. Asalanka, who was instrumental in Sri Lanka’s victories with scores of 106 and 58, moved up two places to No. 6 in the ODI batting rankings.

These latest movements reflect a shift in international cricket’s power dynamics, with several new names rising rapidly up the rankings across formats.
