Jagadeesan Replaces Injured Rishabh Pant in India Squad for Fifth Test at The Oval

Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batter N Jagadeesan has earned his maiden Test call-up for India’s fifth and final Test against England at The Oval, starting Thursday. He comes in as a replacement for Rishabh Pant, who suffered a fractured right foot during the recently concluded fourth Test at Old Trafford.

Jagadeesan, 29, is expected to join the Indian squad in London by Tuesday, having received his UK visa on Sunday morning. He will serve as the backup wicketkeeper to Dhruv Jurel, who has kept wickets in the previous two Tests following Pant’s injury setbacks — first a finger injury and now a more serious foot fracture.

Though Jagadeesan wasn’t initially part of the India A squad for the shadow tour of England, he has been on the BCCI’s radar, having featured regularly in the wider pool of players monitored by the board’s Centre of Excellence over the past year.

Jagadeesan has enjoyed a stellar run in domestic cricket. In the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy, he topped Tamil Nadu's charts with 816 runs in 13 innings at an average of 74.18, including a career-best 321 against Chandigarh in Coimbatore. He followed that up with another strong performance in 2024-25, scoring 674 runs in 13 innings at 56.16.

Since making his first-class debut in 2016, Jagadeesan has built an impressive domestic record with 3373 runs in 79 innings at an average of 47.50, including 10 centuries and 14 half-centuries. Beyond his consistency, he has shown the flexibility to bat in various positions, making him a valuable asset.

Earlier this month, Jagadeesan was also seen in action in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), where he scored a quickfire 81 off 41 balls for Chepauk Super Gillies on July 4. This marks his second tour of the UK, after leading a Tamil Nadu Colts team last year.

India, currently leading the five-match series 2-1, will look to secure the series win at The Oval, with Jagadeesan ready to step in if called upon.
