Yashasvi Jaiswal's imperious sixth Test century powered India to a dominant position on day three of the final Test against England at The Oval. At tea, India stood at 304 for 6 in their second innings, leading by a commanding 281 runs.
Jaiswal, who made 118, scored his fourth Test hundred against England and his second of the series. His counter-attacking knock was instrumental in piling pressure on a depleted English bowling attack that sorely missed the services of Chris Woakes. The visitors will now need to pull off a record chase at this venue—no team has ever successfully chased more than 275 in the fourth innings at The Oval.
Resuming after lunch at 196 for 3, India lost Shubman Gill immediately, trapped lbw by Gus Atkinson with the first ball of the session. Atkinson continued to trouble the Indian batters, removing Karun Nair for 17 after a testing spell. Nair had a scratchy stay, surviving a blow to the glove and a dropped catch by Harry Brook, before edging behind.
Despite the setbacks, Jaiswal remained aggressive, scoring heavily behind square on the off side. He brought up his hundred with a sharp single through backward point, having accumulated 72 of his first 100 runs in that zone alone. His strokeplay was both adventurous and risky, including multiple edges and dabs that flew past the slip cordon. He was eventually dismissed for 118 when Jamie Overton took a well-judged catch at deep third.
Ben Duckett also missed a tough leg-gully chance off Jaiswal, further compounding England’s frustrations in the field. The lack of a specialist spinner hurt England as they rotated a three-man pace attack with occasional overs from Joe Root.
Ravindra Jadeja and Dhruv Jurel guided India safely to the tea interval, despite a close lbw call against Jadeja, which he overturned on review. Arshin Deep contributed a valuable 66 earlier in the innings.
With two days left and the pitch beginning to show signs of wear, England face a daunting task to avoid defeat and secure a 3-1 series win.
