Former Sri Lanka Test cricketer Kaushal Silva has been named the new head coach of the Hong Kong men’s national cricket team. His first major assignment will be leading the side into the upcoming Asia Cup, where Hong Kong are set to open the tournament against Afghanistan on September 9.
Silva, 39, takes the helm of an international team for the first time. A seasoned former wicketkeeper-opener, Silva represented Sri Lanka in 39 Test matches between 2011 and 2018, scoring over 1,800 runs, including three centuries. In a prolific first-class career spanning 209 matches, he amassed 13,932 runs with 41 centuries to his name.
Since retiring from professional cricket in 2019, Silva has held coaching roles across Sri Lanka, England, and Australia. His appointment marks a significant step in his coaching journey and aligns with Cricket Hong Kong’s ambitions to raise the national team’s competitiveness and grassroots appeal.
"Kaushal’s dedication to nurturing and developing talent resonates with our vision for the future of cricket in Hong Kong," said Burji Shroff, Chairperson of Cricket Hong Kong, China. "We believe that under his guidance, we can not only elevate our competitive standing but also promote the sport within our community."
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Silva emphasized a dual focus on results and development. “My focus will be on instilling a strong work ethic and a winning mentality amongst the senior squad and working to identify and nurture fresh talent for continued growth,” he said.
Hong Kong recently finished runners-up in the Asia Pacific Cricket Champions Trophy held in Singapore, falling to Malaysia in the final. Now grouped with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan in Group B of the T20 Asia Cup, the team will be looking to make a strong impression under their new coach.
Silva’s appointment signals a new chapter for Hong Kong cricket as they aim to make strides on the continental stage.
