Kohler-Cadmore’s Blistering 90 Powers Somerset into Vitality Blast Quarter-Finals

A sensational 90 off just 39 balls from Tom Kohler-Cadmore ensured Somerset stormed into the quarter-finals of the Vitality Blast with a thumping 95-run victory over Essex Eagles at the Cooper Associates Ground.

The Somerset opener was in devastating form under the Taunton lights, hammering eight fours and seven sixes in a match-defining knock that lifted the South Group leaders to a towering total of 225 for 6. Kohler-Cadmore shared rapid partnerships of 88 with Will Smeed (32) and 55 with Tom Abell (20), while Sean Dickson added an unbeaten 28 from 17 balls to cap off the innings.

Despite a strong bowling effort from Mohammad Amir, who claimed 3 for 22 in his four overs, the rest of Essex’s attack came in for heavy punishment, particularly debutant Charlie Bennett and allrounder Paul Walter.

Chasing an improbable 226 for victory, Essex’s reply never gained momentum. New Zealand pacer Matt Henry, in his final appearance before returning home, tore through the batting order with 4 for 21. Riley Meredith chipped in with 2 for 22, while the rest of Somerset's attack kept Essex on the back foot throughout.

Essex were bowled out for just 130 in 14.1 overs, with only Noah Thain offering resistance. The 19-year-old struck a quickfire 38 off 17 balls, including four sixes, but his efforts were in vain as wickets tumbled around him.

Earlier in the chase, Walter briefly gave Essex hope with 24 off 11, including a six and two fours off Craig Overton in the opening over. However, the Somerset bowling unit hit back quickly. Meredith cleaned up Michael Pepper, Henry struck twice in three balls to remove Walter and Luc Benkenstein, and a direct hit from Abell ran out Matt Critchley to leave Essex reeling at 81 for 7.

This dominant win solidifies Somerset’s position at the top of the South Group, now 12 points clear of second-placed Surrey. In contrast, Essex remain anchored at the bottom of the table, with just two wins from eleven games.

With the knockout stages approaching, Somerset’s formidable form and the explosive presence of Kohler-Cadmore will make them strong contenders for the title.
