Punjab Kings suffered a significant setback during their high-scoring clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday, as New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson pulled up injured just two balls into his spell in the second innings. The fast bowler appeared to clutch the side of his left leg, just below the hip, and was forced to leave the field after a brief consultation with the team physio. He did not return to bowl for the remainder of the match.
The injury occurred in the sixth over of the Sunrisers’ chase of a mammoth 246-run target — which SRH ultimately overhauled, securing the second-highest successful run chase in IPL history with eight wickets in hand. In Ferguson’s absence, Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis completed the over, but surprisingly did not bowl again for the rest of the innings.
Punjab Kings were forced to rotate through eight different bowlers, including part-timer Shashank Singh, who bowled for the first time this season. The absence of a reliable overseas fast bowler significantly hampered PBKS's bowling plans.
Speaking after the game, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged the impact of Ferguson’s injury on the team’s performance.
"He's someone who can get you wickets, as he's done in previous matches — that was a big blow for us," Iyer said. "But it happens. He's someone who clicks 140-plus all the time. It's part and parcel of a bowler's life, but you know I don't want to give any reasons."
Ferguson’s latest injury comes shortly after his return from a hamstring issue sustained during the ILT20 in the UAE earlier this year, which had already ruled him out of the Champions Trophy in February. This marks his third injury since November 2024, with a prior calf issue sidelining him from New Zealand's ODI series against Sri Lanka late last year.
The timing couldn't be worse for PBKS, who had already used their Impact Player substitution — bringing in fast bowler Yash Thakur for batter Priyansh Arya — and were left without an overseas pace option for most of the second innings. Ferguson is one of only two overseas fast bowlers in the PBKS squad this season, alongside Australia’s Xavier Bartlett.
Before this match, Ferguson had claimed five wickets in three games for PBKS in IPL 2025, maintaining an economy rate of 9.36 and an impressive strike rate of 13.20.
His fitness will now be a major concern for the team going forward, with the IPL season approaching a critical phase.
