Matthew Short, Gudakesh Motie Ruled Out of PSL 2025; Campher Joins Sultans as Replacement

Islamabad United and Multan Sultans have been dealt blows in their Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 campaigns, with key overseas players becoming unavailable due to injury and personal reasons.

Australian wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Short has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a lingering injury, while West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie has returned home to attend to a family matter. In response, Multan Sultans have brought in Irish allrounder Curtis Campher as Motie’s replacement. Islamabad United have yet to name a replacement for Short.

Short, who arrived in Pakistan nursing an injury, never fully recovered despite showing "encouraging signs" during his rehabilitation. According to a statement from Islamabad United, the decision to send Short back to Australia was made jointly with Cricket Australia's medical staff, prioritizing the player's long-term health.

"Islamabad United remain fully committed to the well-being of all our players and extend our support to Matt during his recovery," the franchise said. "We thank him for his professionalism and positive presence in the camp and wish him a swift and complete recovery."

Despite Short’s absence, United have enjoyed a dominant start to their season, winning all four of their opening matches and sitting comfortably at the top of the PSL 2025 standings.

Meanwhile, Motie has flown back to Guyana to attend to a domestic issue, with reports suggesting his father has taken ill. Though he had yet to feature in any of the Sultans' first three matches—all of which they lost—the franchise remains hopeful he may return later in the tournament.

The addition of Campher offers a potential boost for the struggling Sultans, who are now looking to turn their season around as the PSL moves to Multan. Mohammad Rizwan’s side is set to face Lahore Qalandars and Islamabad United in their upcoming home fixtures.
