New Zealand Crush Zimbabwe by Nine Wickets in First Test

New Zealand needed just 14 balls to chase down a target of eight runs and seal a commanding nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the first Test at Queens Sports Club. The result extends Zimbabwe’s poor run in the longest format, marking their fifth consecutive Test defeat, while New Zealand showcased a clinical all-round performance spearheaded by their bowlers.

The visitors were set a nominal target after Zimbabwe were bowled out for 165 in their second innings, following a first-innings collapse for 149. New Zealand’s reply of 307, built on solid contributions from Devon Conway (88) and Daryl Mitchell (80), gave them a 158-run first-innings lead that proved decisive.

The standout performer was fast bowler Matt Henry, who claimed match figures of 9 for 90, including 6 for 39 in the first innings and 3 for 51 in the second. His efforts, combined with Mitchell Santner’s 4 for 27 and Will O'Rourke’s 3 for 28, ensured Zimbabwe never posted a threatening total.

Despite a spirited second-innings stand of 57 between veterans Craig Ervine and Sean Williams, Zimbabwe’s batting once again fell short. Williams top-scored with 49, while wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga frustrated New Zealand with a fighting 27, following his career-best 30 in the first innings. His contributions ensured Zimbabwe avoided an innings defeat but could not prevent a swift conclusion to the match.

New Zealand’s chase began just before the third session, with Conway striking the fifth ball of the innings for four. He was soon dismissed attempting an aggressive shot, but Henry Nicholls guided the visitors home with the winning runs off Newman Nyamhuri.

With this win, New Zealand take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. They achieved victory despite the absence of allrounder Nathan Smith, who was sidelined on the third day due to an abdominal strain.

Zimbabwe’s selection decisions will be under scrutiny ahead of the second Test, particularly after Sikandar Raza failed in both innings playing rash shots. With Brendan Taylor named in the squad for the next Test, Raza’s place could be in jeopardy.

The second and final Test begins next Thursday, offering Zimbabwe one last chance to salvage pride at home.
