Durham began their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Sussex by 51 runs at Roseworth Terrace, thanks to a scintillating century from Ollie Robinson and a maiden List A five-wicket haul from Will Rhodes.

Robinson's counter-attacking 100 off 78 balls — his first List A century for Durham — and a composed 96 from debutant Rhodes helped the home side post an imposing total of 310 for 7 in their 50 overs. In reply, Sussex were bowled out for 259 despite a spirited 74 from Danny Lamb.

Sussex, who elected to bowl first under clear skies, made an early breakthrough as Alex Lees edged behind in the opening over. However, Rhodes and Emilio Gay stabilised the innings with a steady partnership, reaching 50 during the powerplay. Rhodes showcased his intent with a string of classy strokes, including a straight drive for four, and brought up his half-century off 43 deliveries.

After Gay (34) and Colin Ackermann (14) fell in quick succession, Robinson joined Rhodes at the crease and quickly got into his rhythm, hitting 15 boundaries in a commanding knock. Rhodes narrowly missed out on a deserved century, falling for 96 after being caught at deep square leg off Archie Lenham.

Despite a mini-collapse, Robinson anchored the back end of the innings with support from Haydon Mustard (36), pushing Durham past the 300 mark. Robinson eventually brought up his century and fell for 100 exactly, with Ari Karvelas claiming his wicket in the final overs.

In response, Sussex’s chase faltered early. Codi Yusuf and Mitch Killeen made key early inroads, removing Danial Ibrahim, Tom Clark, Charlie Tear, and Tom Haines cheaply to leave the visitors reeling at 86 for 4.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice (43) and Oli Carter (38) tried to steady the ship alongside Lamb, who counterattacked with a flurry of boundaries to raise hopes of a comeback. Lamb’s 35-ball fifty gave Sussex momentum, but Rhodes returned to dismantle the middle and lower order with precision.

Rhodes removed Carter, then struck in quick succession to dismiss Jack Carson, Lamb, and the tail, sealing victory for Durham and finishing with career-best figures of 5 for 30.

The comprehensive win marks a strong start to Durham’s One Day Cup campaign, with both bat and ball delivering in key moments.
