Kieron Pollard delivered a clutch all-round performance to keep MI New York’s playoff hopes alive in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025, guiding his team to a narrow six-run win over Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR), who slumped to their eighth defeat in nine matches.
Pollard starred with both bat and ball, striking a vital 50 off 36 deliveries after coming in with MI New York struggling at 63 for 4 in the tenth over. His knock, which featured four sixes and a four, gave MI New York a fighting chance as they posted 142 for 9. Nicholas Pooran chipped in with a useful 30 from 24 balls, but the rest of the lineup failed to offer much resistance against LAKR’s disciplined bowling attack.
Shadley van Schalkwyk led the bowling for LAKR with 3 for 24, well supported by Jason Holder (2 for 28) and Corne Dry (2 for 25), as MI New York lost wickets regularly and never truly accelerated.
In reply, LAKR faltered despite a solid foundation, ending at 136 for 4 — falling just six runs short of the target. Their top order failed to fire, with Alex Hales scratching out a sluggish 21 off 26 and Andre Fletcher managing just nine off ten balls.
Unmukt Chand anchored the innings with a steady 59 from 48 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford added 29 off 28. But the duo’s inability to maintain the required run rate proved costly. With 21 needed off the final two overs, MI New York tightened the screws.
Pollard returned to remove Rutherford in the 19th over, conceding just six runs in a game-defining spell that also saw LAKR retire out Chand to bring in big-hitters. However, the ploy failed as Andre Russell and Jason Holder couldn’t find the boundaries, managing only 15 in the final over bowled by Ehsan Adil.
Pollard's figures of 1 for 12 from two overs added to his half-century, making him the clear standout in a low-scoring thriller.
The loss all but ends LAKR’s season, with only one win from nine matches, while MI New York now have three wins and remain mathematically in contention for the playoffs.
