Rain Disrupts Day 3 in Sylhet as Bangladesh Reach 194/4 Against Zimbabwe

Persistent rain and bad light hampered play on the third day of the first Test between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in Sylhet, with only 44 overs possible. Bangladesh moved to 194 for 4 before umpires called off play at 5 PM local time, despite having the option to extend play till 6 PM due to earlier rain delays.

The day began with the outfield under covers, as rain wiped out the first three hours of play. When action finally resumed in the afternoon, Bangladesh added 137 runs but also lost three crucial wickets, leaving the match delicately poised.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto led from the front, remaining unbeaten on 60 at stumps. His composed innings came as part of a steadying fifth-wicket partnership with Jaker Ali, which is fast becoming vital for the hosts’ chances in the match.

The day, however, belonged to Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani, who continued his fine form, claiming two of the three wickets to fall on the day. He opened his account by removing Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who once again failed to convert a start. Joy made 33 off 65 balls with six boundaries, but his struggles continued as he extended a streak of 17 innings without a half-century, the last of which also came in Sylhet back in November 2023.

Shanto looked in good touch early on, but offered a chance on 26 when he edged Wessly Madhevere, only for wicketkeeper Nyasha Mayavo to drop a simple catch—his second costly miss in the game.

A crucial 65-run third-wicket stand between Shanto and Mominul Haque helped Bangladesh stabilize, but Mominul (47 off 86) fell to the short ball once again, this time from Victor Nyauchi, with Mayavo finally making no mistake behind the stumps.

Just before tea, Muzarabani returned for another telling spell, this time targeting veteran Mushfiqur Rahim. After tying him down with nine consecutive dot balls, he drew an edge on the tenth, with skipper Craig Ervine taking a sharp catch at first slip to reduce Bangladesh to 155 for 4.

Shanto later brought up his half-century with a crisp cover drive off Wellington Masakadza, and continued to hold firm alongside Jaker as Bangladesh sought to regain control.

With two days remaining and the weather still a looming threat, the Sylhet Test remains finely balanced, although Zimbabwe will be buoyed by their disciplined bowling and timely breakthroughs.

Score Summary:
Bangladesh 194/4 (Shanto 60, Mominul 47, Muzarabani 3 wickets)*
Zimbabwe yet to bat in second innings
Day 3: Limited to 44 overs due to rain and bad light
