Oval Invincibles began their campaign for a historic third consecutive Men's Hundred title in dominant fashion, thrashing London Spirit by six wickets at Lord’s. A stellar bowling display from Rashid Khan and Sam Curran helped skittle Spirit for just 80, before a composed chase secured a comfortable opening victory for the defending champions.
Rashid, playing his first match for the Invincibles, was outstanding on debut with figures of 3 for 11, while Curran chipped in with 3 for 16. London Spirit never recovered after a disastrous start that saw star batters Keaton Jennings, Kane Williamson, and David Warner dismissed early, with the scoreboard reading just 26. The innings never gained momentum, and the team was bundled out for a meagre total.
“It was nice to get that start, with the win most importantly and then to perform for the team was amazing,” said Rashid. “I've been out of the game for the last two months, so it's nice to get back with a win.”
Rashid also praised the Lord’s surface, saying: “It was a good surface. Spin was there but the length you bowled was really important. I just aimed to hit the right areas consistently, and it worked.”
In response, the Invincibles were in no rush as they chased down the modest target of 81 under the lights. Will Jacks anchored the innings with a fluent 24, before Sam Billings and Donovan Ferreira calmly guided their side to victory. Ferreira finished the match in style, launching the only six of the game into the Tavern Stand.
Oval Invincibles, led by Billings, are aiming for a rare "three-peat" after winning the title in both 2023 and 2024. The commanding nature of this victory suggests they remain the team to beat.
“It’s a great start to our campaign,” said Billings. “We’ve set the tone and the boys are hungry to keep the momentum going.”
