Matt Renshaw and Jason Sangha starred with the bat as Australia A sealed a commanding seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka A in the series-deciding one-day match in Darwin. The result secured a 2-1 win for the hosts in the three-match series and further bolstered Renshaw’s growing case for an ODI call-up.
Set a modest target of 214, Australia A chased it down comfortably, reaching 215 for 3 with 105 balls to spare. Sangha anchored the innings with an unbeaten 79 off 76 balls, while Renshaw hammered a quickfire 62 off just 36 deliveries, including eight fours and two sixes. Opener Campbell Kellaway laid the foundation with a composed 56 from 62 deliveries.
Renshaw’s latest innings capped off a prolific series for the left-hander, who posted scores of 80, 106, and 62 in the three games. With the recent ODI retirements of Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith, Renshaw’s form could not be better timed.
The 29-year-old has already featured in 14 Tests for Australia but is yet to earn a cap in white-ball internationals. His dominant performances in the Australia A setup may now see him propelled into the national ODI squad ahead of upcoming tours and the next ICC cycle.
Earlier, Sri Lanka A fought back from an early collapse at 8 for 2 to post a total of 213 for 9. Sahan Arachchige top-scored with 47 off 65 balls, supported by Nuwanidu Fernando (40) and Sonal Dinusha (36). However, no batter was able to push on to a defining innings.
Australia A’s bowlers shared the spoils in an all-round display. Jack Nisbet (2 for 26), Bryce Jackson (2 for 25), and Henry Thornton (2 for 42) all contributed key wickets. Debutant Zanden Jeh, a left-arm spinner who had not previously played professional state cricket, made a strong impression with 1 for 27 from seven tidy overs.
Sangha’s unbeaten 79 was his second half-century of the series and further enhanced his credentials as a future middle-order option in the national setup. At just 25, the former Under-19 captain continues to build a compelling case through consistent performances at the A level.
The two sides will now turn their attention to the longer format, with a two-match four-day series set to begin shortly. For Australia A, the limited-overs success offers selectors plenty to ponder, especially with spots up for grabs in a transitioning national ODI team.
