Rishabh Pant Retires Hurt After Foot Injury During Fourth Test at Old Trafford

India's hopes in the fourth Test at Old Trafford suffered a major blow as wicketkeeper and vice-captain Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt after sustaining a painful foot injury. Pant was batting on 37 when he inside-edged a reverse sweep off England pacer Chris Woakes onto his right foot. Despite surviving an LBW appeal and DRS review, the swelling was immediate, and the visible pain forced him to leave the field.

The incident occurred during a crucial phase of India's innings. Pant, known for his audacious shot-making, had earlier slog-swept Jofra Archer for four but attempted a reverse sweep on the following delivery that led to the injury. He collapsed in pain and received on-field medical attention before being transported off on a golf-style buggy.

Pant was initially taken to the medical facility at the ground and later to a hospital for scans. Captain Shubman Gill accompanied him during the initial medical assessment. Early signs indicated a serious issue, raising concerns over Pant’s participation in the remainder of the Test.

Liam Dawson, England’s spinner who was on the field at the time, expressed concern: “He looked in a lot of pain. I wish him well, but honestly, I can’t see him playing much more part in this game.”

India's B Sai Sudharsan, who was batting at the other end, confirmed the extent of Pant’s discomfort. “He was in a lot of pain, definitely,” Sudharsan said. “They’ve taken him for scans, and we’ll know more by tomorrow.”

Sudharsan acknowledged the significance of Pant’s absence. “Obviously, he was batting really well. It will be a loss if he doesn’t return, but the batters still in and the allrounders we have will try to absorb the pressure and bat long.”

This marks Pant’s second injury in as many Tests. During the previous match at Lord’s, he suffered a blow to his left index finger while keeping wicket and was substituted by Dhruv Jurel for the remainder of that Test. Despite discomfort, Pant was cleared to play in Manchester — but now faces another setback.

As India awaits scan results, the team management will hope for a swift recovery, though early indications suggest his return in this Test remains doubtful.
