India vice-captain and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing Test series against England after scans confirmed a fracture in his right foot. The injury, sustained on the opening day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, will also see him miss the fifth and final Test at The Oval, scheduled to begin next week.
Pant suffered the injury while attempting a reverse sweep against England allrounder Chris Woakes during the second session of play. The ball took an inside edge and struck his front (right) foot, leaving him in immediate and visible pain. Despite surviving a subsequent lbw appeal and review, Pant was forced to retire hurt on 37 and was later seen being transported off the field on a golf buggy.
Medical scans confirmed a metatarsal fracture, with initial assessments suggesting a recovery period of six to eight weeks. Fan footage from outside the India team hotel in Manchester showed Pant wearing a moonboot on his right foot, further confirming the severity of the injury.
While Pant has been officially ruled out from keeping duties in the ongoing Test, the team management and BCCI medical staff will determine if he can bat later in the match, depending on his condition. His injury marks the second consecutive setback for Pant in the series, following a blow to his left index finger during the third Test at Lord’s, which required him to hand over wicketkeeping duties to Dhruv Jurel.
England spinner Liam Dawson commented after the day’s play, saying he "can’t see him [Pant] playing much more part in this game," while Pant’s batting partner at the time, B Sai Sudharsan, noted, "Oh, he was in a lot of pain definitely."
Pant’s 48-ball 37 was a mix of composure and flair, featuring a trademark slog sweep for four off Jofra Archer before the ill-fated reverse sweep the next delivery.
With Pant out, Dhruv Jurel is expected to take over wicketkeeping responsibilities once again for the remainder of the fourth Test and possibly the series finale at The Oval.
