England have suffered a major setback ahead of the final two matches of the ongoing T20I series against India, with star allrounder Nat Sciver-Brunt ruled out due to a groin injury. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Saturday that Sciver-Brunt will miss the remainder of the five-match series, but is expected to recover in time for the upcoming three-match ODI series.
Sciver-Brunt sustained the left-groin injury during the second T20I, where she managed just 13 runs. Though she was initially ruled out only for the third match, further scans revealed that the injury would require a longer recovery period. Maia Bouchier has been added to the squad as her replacement.
Tammy Beaumont, who stepped in as captain for the third T20I in Nottingham — her first time leading England in her 247th international match — will continue in the role. Beaumont led from the front as England bounced back with a win after losing the opening two matches of the series.
Sciver-Brunt had led England in the first two T20Is, both of which were convincingly won by India. In the opener, Smriti Mandhana's stunning century powered India to a 97-run win. The second match saw half-centuries from Jemimah Rodrigues and Amanjot Kaur set up a 24-run victory for the visitors. Sciver-Brunt did not bowl in either game as part of workload management, but made a notable contribution with the bat in the first match, scoring 66 off 42 balls — the only significant performance in England’s 113 all out.
Ahead of the third T20I, Beaumont had addressed Sciver-Brunt’s injury status, stating, “That's something we don't know just yet, our medical team are doing all they can. She's got a scan today, so we'll know more... I’m just hoping to put my hand up for the team and will welcome Nat back with open arms whenever she's fit.”
Despite Sophia Dunkley being the official vice-captain, the England team management opted for Beaumont to lead the side, valuing her extensive international experience.
With India leading the series 2-1, the remaining matches will be played in Manchester on Wednesday and in Birmingham on Saturday. England will be hoping to build on the momentum of their third-game win and level the series in Sciver-Brunt’s absence.
