Shadman Islam’s Century Sets Platform, But Zimbabwe Fight Back Late on Day 2 in Chattogram

Shadman Islam’s second Test century gave Bangladesh a commanding start on the second day of the second Test against Zimbabwe in Chattogram, but a late fightback from the visitors kept the match finely balanced. Bangladesh ended the day on 291 for 7, holding a 64-run lead with three wickets in hand.

The day began with Zimbabwe losing their final wicket on the first ball of the morning, bowled out for 227 in their first innings. Bangladesh’s reply got off to a solid start, thanks to a 118-run opening partnership between Shadman and Anamul Haque. Shadman was particularly fluent early on, striking multiple boundaries through the covers and down the ground, while Anamul, playing his first Test in over two years, played a watchful hand.

Muzarabani provided Zimbabwe with their first breakthrough shortly after lunch, trapping Anamul lbw for 39. Shadman, however, continued his composed innings, building another substantial 76-run stand with Mominul Haque, who struck a six and three boundaries before falling to a mistimed shot at deep midwicket.

The momentum shifted when Brian Bennett dismissed Shadman for 120 off 181 balls, trapping him lbw after a well-crafted innings featuring 14 fours and a rare six — only the second of his Test career. It triggered a mini-collapse for Bangladesh.

Zimbabwe debutant Vincent Masekesa impressed with the ball, claiming 3 for 44, including the key wickets of Jaker Ali and Nayeem Hasan. In between, Mushfiqur Rahim played a brisk knock of 40, peppering the boundary with four fours and a six before being run out following a sharp throw from Wessly Madhevere.

Najmul Hossain Shanto also looked in good touch, hitting a six and a four before falling for 21, handing Masekesa his maiden Test wicket. Bangladesh lost 4 for 20 in the final session, opening the door for Zimbabwe to claw back into the contest.

At stumps, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (16*) and Taijul Islam (5*) were at the crease, trying to extend the hosts' slim lead.

Earlier, Taijul Islam had been the star with the ball for Bangladesh, finishing with 6 for 60 to bowl Zimbabwe out. Sean Williams (67) and Nick Welch (54) had led Zimbabwe’s resistance on day one, but their efforts were quickly undone on the second morning.

With three days remaining and both sides trading blows, the Test remains intriguingly poised.

Score Summary:
Zimbabwe 1st innings: 227 all out (Williams 67, Welch 54; Taijul 6-60)
Bangladesh 1st innings: 291/7 at stumps (Shadman 120, Mushfiqur 40; Masekesa 3-44)
Lead: Bangladesh lead by 64 runs with 3 wickets remaining
