Shubman Gill Suffers Minor Back Spasm, Hopes to Return for GT’s Next IPL 2025 Clash Against SRH

Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill was sidelined from fielding duties due to a minor back spasm during their IPL 2025 fixture against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Monday night. Despite a stellar batting performance where Gill smashed 84 off 50 balls to help GT post a formidable 209/4, the team ultimately succumbed to a heavy defeat, courtesy of a blazing 35-ball century by RR teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

Gill was substituted after GT's innings, with pacer Ishant Sharma brought in as an Impact Player. Vice-captain Rashid Khan led the side in Gill’s absence. Post-match, the GT skipper confirmed that his substitution was precautionary, with the team's medical staff advising rest ahead of their quick turnaround for Friday’s home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

“I just felt a little back spasm, and with another game just a couple of days away, the physio said it was best not to take a chance,” Gill said during the post-match presentation.

Despite the defeat, GT remain in a strong position on the points table with six wins from their first nine games, keeping them well in the hunt for the IPL 2025 playoffs.

Reflecting on the loss, Gill acknowledged the early dominance of the Royals. “They took the game away from us in the powerplay and credit to them for that. There were a couple of things we could have done better, but it's very easy to say those things after the game,” he said.

Gill also lauded Suryavanshi's explosive knock, calling it a special performance. “It was his day. His hitting was just tremendous and I think he made full use of it,” he added.

GT will look to bounce back when they return to their home ground in Ahmedabad, a venue where they have enjoyed recent success.
