Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori remains confident in his team's aggressive top-order approach despite a fourth straight defeat in IPL 2025. However, Vettori acknowledged that the batters must adapt better to conditions and respect the strategies of opposition bowlers, particularly those targeting their top three.
In Sunday’s loss to Gujarat Titans (GT), SRH were limited to a modest 152 for 8 in 20 overs. GT chased down the target comfortably in just 16.4 overs, winning by seven wickets. Vettori, reflecting on the defeat, emphasized that while SRH's aggressive batting style remains their strategy, the players must assess conditions better and recognize the quality of opposition bowling, which has been well-planned against SRH's top order.
“We know the style is going to work, but we have to respect conditions, and we have to assess really well, and that’s probably something we haven’t done,” Vettori said after the match. “Other teams are putting a lot of planning into our top three, and we haven't always been able to execute well.”
The conditions during the game, according to Vettori, weren’t typical of the usual Hyderabad wicket. The pitch was slow and challenging for the batters, making it tough to score runs. SRH had initially targeted a total in the range of 160-170, but fell short by around 20 runs. “We needed 20 more runs to put pressure on them,” Vettori added. “Their understanding of the conditions was spot on, and they executed well.”
SRH had started the season on a high, recording a massive 286 for 6 against Rajasthan Royals, but the team’s form has taken a nosedive since. While Vettori admitted that the team was not performing at their best, he emphasized that it was not yet time for panic. “We understand the ramifications of losing four in a row and how difficult it makes the season,” he said, adding that SRH must regroup quickly before their next game against Punjab Kings on April 12.
Despite the losses, Vettori remained calm, noting that both he and captain Pat Cummins do not panic easily. "It's tough, especially after coming off a strong finish last season and a good start this year," he said. "But we just haven’t been near our best in the last four games."
The coach also pointed out that SRH’s struggles weren’t limited to batting alone. “We haven’t been able to click in all three disciplines. Our fielding, in particular, has been pretty poor, and that’s something we need to address,” Vettori added.
Looking ahead, the coach believes that SRH still has the potential to bounce back. “If we can get on a roll, we’re still a very good team,” he said. “We just need to find our rhythm.”
As the team prepares for their next match, Vettori remains hopeful that the swift turnarounds in the IPL will allow his players to regain form, and individual performances can lift the collective spirit of the side.
