Unicorns Edge Super Kings in One-Run Thriller to Go Clear at the Top of MLC 2025

The San Francisco Unicorns held their nerve in a nail-biting finish to defeat Texas Super Kings by just one run in a low-scoring thriller at Lauderhill, continuing the trend of tight contests at the venue in Major League Cricket 2025. The result saw Unicorns climb to the top of the points table with 14 points from nine matches, while the Super Kings slipped to third with 12 points.

Chasing a modest target of 149, the Super Kings needed 13 runs off the final over with Calvin Savage at the crease. However, Xavier Bartlett’s excellent death bowling proved decisive. Despite Mohammad Mohsin striking two boundaries, the match came down to three needed off the final delivery. Bartlett delivered a low full-toss, and the batters could only manage a single before Savage was run out attempting a second run to tie the match.

Earlier, Unicorns captain Matthew Short played a captain’s knock, anchoring the innings from the first ball to the last. His unbeaten 80 off 63 balls, laced with five fours and four sixes, was the backbone of San Francisco's 148 for 6. Short shared a crucial 69-run partnership with Hassan Khan (40 off 25), after early wickets had left Unicorns struggling at 23 for 3.

Marcus Stoinis starred with the ball for the Super Kings, claiming 3 for 32 and removing key batters Finn Allen, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Hassan Khan.

In reply, Texas Super Kings were pegged back early by Brody Couch, who dismissed both openers — captain Faf du Plessis and Smit Patel — within the first four overs. Despite a middle-order recovery led by Stoinis (34 off 29) and Donovan Ferreira (39 off 20), TSK struggled to keep up with the required rate.

Romario Shepherd (2 for 26) and Couch (2 for 26) continued to apply pressure through the middle overs, leaving too much for the lower order in the final stretch.

The one-run victory underlined Unicorns’ ability to defend even modest totals and reinforced their credentials as serious title contenders this season.

Score Summary:
San Francisco Unicorns: 148/6 (Matthew Short 80*, Hassan Khan 40; Marcus Stoinis 3-32)
Texas Super Kings: 147/7 (Donovan Ferreira 39, Stoinis 34; Brody Couch 2-26, Romario Shepherd 2-26)
Result: Unicorns won by 1 run
